Square One was awarded $150,000 from the Hampden County Regional Employment Board to implement a new program for at-risk youth.
Participants served through this program - the Square One Young Mom Squad - will work toward the completion of their HiSET (GED certificate) and experience work opportunities leading to the development of a career plan and improved self-sufficiency.
Square One's Mom Squad is an innovative program that helps put at-risk moms to work through the availability of community service hours by volunteering with the community agencies listed in the Department of Transitional Assistance's community service data base. By performing a minimum of 30 hours per week of community service, the parents and caregivers may be eligible for voucher assistance which will enable them to enroll their children in high-quality early education and care programs.
Square One is greatly appreciative of the grant award and looking forward to working with other Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) youth vendors in our community. We are working diligently to secure additional funding to offer full-time instruction through our partnership with Holyoke Community College. Participants will also be looking for work experience outside of Square One, so please let us know if you are interested in working with a young person.
