The late Maya Angelou once said, “If you’re going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.”

I’m reminded of those words as I reflect on the recent passing of two dear friends of Square One, who for years donated their time, talent and treasures to support our work with children and families.

Anne Keeney was a longtime member of our Board of Directors. Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing Anne personally, her family reached out to us to let us know how important Square One was to her. They shared with us Anne’s passion for providing opportunities for children – a commitment that will not soon be forgotten thanks to Anne’s family and friends who have chosen to give generously in Anne’s name since her passing.

The Square One family is also mourning the loss of Tracy Michel. What a soft spot she had for our children! Tracy would voluntarily pick up classroom supplies when she noticed clearance sales and often collected recycled materials to be used for classroom projects. Like Anne, Tracy’s memory will live on at Square One thanks to the generosity of her family and friends who have chosen to honor her memory with a gift to the children and families we serve.

Today, I want to thank and honor both Anne and Tracy for the mark they left on Square One, as well as those who have contributed in their names. Our children and families, and our organization and community are better because of this lasting legacy.
