Mission Moments

  • Mom Squad is a vital program built to serve mothers who are homeless or at risk for homelessness.

  • The LAUNCH curriculum consists of fun, physical activities that includes topics such as conflict resolution, personal safety, hygiene, nutrition, stress reduction and more.

  • Children are inside the classroom having fun and playing games. Throw in some singing, too. What you hear is the sound of young children learning early literacy skills.

Leaders in the Community

Jenise Katalina, Assistant Vice President of Family Services at Square One, is currently leading the planning committee for the Maternal Child Health Commission Annual Teen Conference. The Teen Conference has been an annual event put forth through the Springfield Department of Health and Human Services Maternal Child Health Commission, and is set to take place on October 26, 2017.

Food for Thought

Square One is proud to be a partner of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts’ Mobile Food Bank. On the second and fourth Mondays of each month, our staff distributes food outside Dakin Humane Society to members of the community.

On July 24, we distributed 4,500 pounds of food to 346 people!

Summer Fun Continues!

Our Annual Family Fun Summer Party at out King Street Family Center was a big hit, once again this year! Dozens of families turned out to enjoy music, games, snacks and prizes. Best of all, each family received free new books to take home! Special thanks to Boomer from the Springfield Thunderbirds for joining in the fun!

Thank You, Berkshire Bank!

Square One has been awarded $10,000 by Berkshire Bank in support of its “Adopt-A-Classroom” program!

"We are excited to continue our ongoing support of Square One’s Adopt-A-Classroom initiative program,” says Jim Hickson, SVP Commercial Regional President. “Berkshire Bank is committed to making a difference in the lives of local children and their families.”

Foot in the Door

What happens when like-minded organizations come together with a common purpose? SUCCESS! Just ask Jennifer DeChristopher, a current Square One Healthy Families participant who recently graduated from the Foot in the Door program. In complement to the benefits she is realizing from being part of Healthy Families, Jennifer credits Foot in the Door with giving her the motivation and support she needed to build her resume, search for a job, perfect her interview skills, and earn her National Career Readiness Certificate.

2017 Healthy Families Graduation

In keeping with its mission to ensure that all parents have access to the tools and resources they need to be successful, we recently celebrated the completion of another session of our Healthy Families program initiative.

The ceremony was held on August 2, 2017, at the Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist in Springfield. In total, 26 young families graduated from the program.

How We Love Our Visitors!

Big thanks to all of our recent visitors!

Our very dear friends at Disability Management Services (DMS) and their families who recently spent the day with the children at our Main Street preschool classroom. We were also recently joined by Elias Acuna of Maria Acuna Real Estate, who took time out of his busy day to read to some of our preschoolers.

How fortunate Square One is to have such wonderful community supporters!

It’s Hip to Buy Squares

First there were dice. Then came Wendy’s hamburgers, followed by Rubik’s Cube and SpongeBob. Now, Bob Bolduc and his team at Pride Stores want to add Square One to the list of famous “squares.”

The locally owned chain of gas stations and convenience stores is launching a campaign where customers may purchase a “square” for one dollar, in support of the work Square One does with children and families throughout the region.

Hats Off to You!

Short of heading to Church Hill Downs, the Colony Club in Springfield was the place to go for the 2017 Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 6. Hundreds of guests wore their finest hats, floral patterns and pastels to celebrate the 143rd running of the annual race. The event has become a signature event for Square One – a regional non-profit organization serving at-risk children and families.
