It’s Hip to Buy Squares

First there were dice. Then came Wendy’s hamburgers, followed by Rubik’s Cube and SpongeBob. Now, Bob Bolduc and his team at Pride Stores want to add Square One to the list of famous “squares.”

The locally owned chain of gas stations and convenience stores is launching a campaign where customers may purchase a “square” for one dollar, in support of the work Square One does with children and families throughout the region.

Hats Off to You!

Short of heading to Church Hill Downs, the Colony Club in Springfield was the place to go for the 2017 Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 6. Hundreds of guests wore their finest hats, floral patterns and pastels to celebrate the 143rd running of the annual race. The event has become a signature event for Square One – a regional non-profit organization serving at-risk children and families.

Congratulations, Dawn DiStefano

Congratulations to Square One’s Dawn DiStefano, who was recently named to the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women to represent the Pioneer Valley.

A total of 18 members were named to the Hampden County Commission of the Status of Women and Girls and the Hampshire-Franklin Commission of the Status of Women and Girls.

Springfield Healthy Homes Collaborative Project

Square One is proud to be joining Partners for Healthier Communities in the Springfield Healthy Homes Collaborative (SHHC) project.

State Advocacy

Our Square One Family Services Team joined Children's Trust on a mission to stop child abuse in Massachusetts. As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month we are working to help spread awareness about the issue and promote our effective programs to keep our children safe and healthy.

Thank you to Maryann McCarthy and Liz Szarkowski from our Healthy Families program for representing Square One in Boston.

Love for our Staff

Special thanks to everyone who made our Staff Appreciation Week at our King Street Center so special! Our educators were treated to massages by our friends at Elements Massage, manicures from the cosmetology students at Putnam High School, and a wonderful luncheon compliments of Big Mamou's, Nadim's, and Frankie & Johnnie's! We topped off the week with a delicious cake donated by Theme Cakes by Joelene!

From the President

Dear Friends,

One of the best parts of my job is when I get to spend time in our classrooms and family centers. I am always impressed when I have the opportunity to experience our Square One staff in action.

Recently, I visited our King Street Learning Center and met a delightful little boy named Jack. At two years old, Jack had charmed the entire staff at the center with his bright smile, happy giggle, and loving personality.

Fallon Health Supports Learn & Earn

Our friends from Fallon Health recently paid a visit to our Learn & Earn HiSET classroom to present a check for $10,000 to support our education and workforce development initiative for teen parents. Thank you to Fallon’s Richard Burke and Kim Salmon for recognizing the importance of this work!

We are so grateful to Smith & Wesson for their longstanding support of the children and families at Square One. In addition to supporting Square One’s work with survivors of domestic abuse, Smith & Wesson employees pledged over $10,500 of their own money to support our work with children and families. Best of all, Smith & Wesson will match each of these employee donations, bringing the total annual support we receive from the company to nearly $30,000 this year.

All About Dads

Our Square One Healthy Families staff recently attended the 18th Annual New England fathering conference. The conference, entitled “Dads: Involved Today, Committed Forever,” welcomed dads, family service providers, social workers, health professionals, educators, program directors, state and federal representatives, and father advocates who participated in two and a half days of learning and sharing. The title of this year’s conference reflected the understanding that every father leaves an indelible mark on his child’s life.
