AIC Hockey Breaks the Ice with Square One Preschoolers

What a great visit our Square One children had with the AIC Hockey Team! HUGE thanks to Yellow Jacket Head Coach Eric Lang, Program Director Alec Rippetoe, and Senior Public Relations Specialist Candy Lash for coordinating the visit. We are so proud to have AIC as our community partner.

Making a Difference

Congratulations, Joan Kagan! Square One’s President & CEO was recently honored with the prestigious Difference Makers award for her career-long commitment to improving the lives and circumstances of at-risk children and families. Surrounded by family, friends and colleagues, Joan accepted her award with grace and humility.

Joan shared the stage with fellow honorees Denis Gagnon of Excel Dryer; the Community Colleges of Western Massachusetts; Friends of the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round; and Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts. Congratulations to all the deserving winners!

Champions for Children

Huge thanks to our newest “Adopt-A-Classroom” sponsors: Alekman & DiTusa Attorneys at Law; and John & Kathleen Gormally!

Food for Thought

Did you know that more than 223,000 people in Western Massachusetts struggle with food insecurity? Hunger and lack of nutritious food have long-term consequences for children, including increased rates of impaired cognitive and brain development, lowered immune response, short stature, and obesity. Similarly, studies show that malnourished elders experience more frequent and prolonged hospital stays, with a higher rate of complications.

Celebrating Black History Month

Through music, art and literature our children, families and staff celebrated the heritage, accomplishments and culture of African Americans throughout our history. Our Square One Learn & Earn students recently visited the Pan African Historical Museum USA in Springfield as part of their studies, while our early learning and pre-school children shared experiences in African music, dance and artwork.

Icky, Sticky, Gooey

What fun our Square One families had getting icky, sticky and gooey at our recent Family Fun Night. If this looks like fun, be sure to join us for our other events this month.

It Takes a Village to Teach a Child

Our success in helping our children learn is only as strong as the partners who support our work. Huge thanks to Susan Kaplan and all of our dear friends at Link to Libraries, who provide our children with books of all genres for our children to enjoy both in our classrooms and in their homes. We are so grateful to Drs. Lou and Mary Adler, who generously sponsor books for the children who attend our Holyoke Early Learning Center.

Learning and Earning

Square One Learn & Earn participant Alisha Wilson had the opportunity to complete her 1-day job shadow exercise in our very own commercial kitchen, as part of our comprehensive HiSET (formally GED) workforce development initiative. Alisha is one of many young parents participating in this program made possible by the Regional Employment Board, the Community Foundation, and most recently, Fallon Health. We are excited to welcome Fallon Health to celebrate our partnership on our King Street Center on March 9, 2017. Please join us at 9:00 a.m.
